Insight into wedding styling with Nomad Weddings

Today on the blog we have a special guest and an all time favourite in the wedding industry. Please welcome Shonel from Nomad Styling! Now that I am planning my own wedding, I realise there is so much I don’t know about others in the industry. So catching up with people like Shonel, gives me the perfect little insight and some great tips.

Nomad styling is a great little business, making waves in the wedding industry. How did it all start for you?
I have always been a very visual-based person but I came from a strong sales background. I then moved over to visual merchandising as it was always a small part of my sales role that I spent way too much of my time on ( yeah I finally realised it haha) But in the company, I worked for I felt very creatively capped so I knew I needed more freedom and fewer restrictions. The only logical thing to do was to take a leap and start something for me. I’m a romantic at heart so the wedding industry seemed like a natural fit and from there it has been a beautiful ride.

What is your vision for your business in the future?
I love how much business evolves, it’s such a beautiful thing when you’re in a profession that is also strongly connected to your personal growth. Honestly, I have gone through waves where I’ve thought that other design based styling jobs were what I wanted to do. But they lack the same emotion as weddings, and I’m such an emotional based person. I adore the connections I make with my couples and the moments I get to witness with this profession. So ideally I want to stay doing beautiful weddings for loved up couples, continue working on styling photo shoots and see what other amazing opportunities come my way. I’m currently working on 2 restaurant fit outs which are an exciting and welcoming challenge and has been such an incredible learning curve too. I’m not one to sit in a comfort zone and stay there. If I stay in something for quite a while, it’s because I truly adore it and it feeds my soul.

You seem to be styling the coolest weddings going around. How do you attract such amazing clients?
I would normally just say I’m lucky, but I’m slowly learning to say that it’s my hard work paying off ( that mixed in with some good karma)! I think people really appreciate my eye for detail and love for pushing boundaries, it’s why I attract a lot of designers who are getting married. It’s definitely a compliment and I’m always so truly grateful for my amazing clients the faith they have in me is so humbling.

Advice would you give to a couple in search for a stylist for their wedding day?
I always tell people who are engaged in choosing vendors whose work really speaks to them and who they connect with. I understand budget has to come into it, but everyone has their unique perspective on the world and your paying for someone who’s perspective you love and who resonates with you as a couple.  I think if people chose that way, you would end up gravitating to others on the same wavelength and the end result and the entire experience is so much more amazing for everyone involved.

How can a wedding stylist help in the planning stages of a wedding?
Oh gosh, in so many ways. Choosing the right vendors is so crucial to any good design. The earlier you can get your stylist on board the better really. I’ve helped people select venues that are right for their visuals they were looking for. Even knowing the furniture avail to use from a venue can save you thousands off your styling budget from externally bringing other items in. A good stylist will help you every step of the way. When you book them it should feel like a big weight off, you need to be able to trust them completely.

Who are your favourite wedding vendors in the Melbourne scene and why?
Gah, this is way too hard. I have too many from all over Victoria. Based on what I said above for me my fav vendors are all people whose work either really speaks to me, or I connect with them as people. As far as who I recommend to my clients, it’s all subjective to what they are looking for on their day and the visuals they are trying to create.

What music would typically be playing on your favourite playlist?
I have a real varied playlist but I keep going back to old soul music like Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings. Anything soulful gets me going. I’m often listening to PBS or Triple J. I have a brother right into the music scene who is forever sharing the new music he’s discovered with me, so I feel like my favs are also always changing.
